About the Cover

Cover Figure

Earthquake hazard maps that predict that portions of the central and eastern United States are more hazardous than California result from a number of crucial assumptions. The cover shows a graphic comparison of the effect of different assumptions on the predicted hazard in the New Madrid region and is taken from “Time-dependent Seismic Hazard Maps for the New Madrid Seismic Zone and Charleston, South Carolina, Areas,” by James S. Hebden and Seth Stein, which begins on page 12.
