About the Cover

Cover Figure

The Hellenist/Roman city of Termessos is located high in the Taurus Mountains of southwest Turkey, some 30 km northwest of the city of Antalya. The Roman Gymnasium shown on the front cover dates from the 1st A.D., and it presents dramatic evidence of ground shaking caused by one or more earthquakes. As an undisturbed archaeological site, Termessos makes an excellent “seismoscope”—a testing ground for predicted site effects in earthquake scenarios—as described in this issue’s opinion column, “Earthquake Archaeology—Just a Good Story?” which begins on page 767. The back cover of this issue depicts the ShakeMap of Modified Mercalli Intensities for the mainshock of the 29 July 2008 Mw 5.4 Chino Hills earthquake. This image is Figure 2 of a preliminary report about that recent earthquake—the largest in the greater Los Angeles area since the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The report begins on page 855.
