About the Cover

Cover Figure

Since going live in 2000, The U.S. Geological Surveys "Did You Feel It?" (DYFI) program has collected more than 750,000 citizen reports based on Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) of earthquakes in the United States. These responses are summarized graphically on the cover of this issue of SRL, and they are the subject of the article "Did You Feel It?" Intensity Data: A Surprisingly Good Measure of Earthquake Ground Motion, beginning on page 362. Authors Gail Atkinson and David Wald conclude that not only are DYFI data a valuable resource for both qualitative and quantitative earthquake studies, they also have potential to shed light on some longstanding controversies in earthquake science.
