About the Cover

Cover Figure

Mission San Juan Bautista sits almost directly atop a scarp along the San Andreas Fault in central California. This location marks the southern terminus of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake; the mission was damaged in the earthquake but survived. This issue of SRL is the first of six to be published during 2006, which is not only the 100th anniversary of the earthquake but also SSA's centennial year. In addition to the journal's regular features and articles on the usual range of topics, Volume 77 will include a number of Opinion and regular articles with a centennial theme, as well as a few special features. Making its debut in this issue: the first in a series of brief articles on the Unsung Heroines from the early days of SSA and seismology more generally. SSA members who are interested in contributing to this series, or submitting other articles related to the centennial, are encouraged to contact the editor (hough@usgs.gov).
