James Devine, the senior advisor for science applications at the
U.S. Geological Survey, and P. Patrick Leahy, former acting director of
the USGS, each recently received the Distinguished Senior Professional Award
for their leadership and accomplishment within the Department of the Interior.
Devine provides bureau policy and guidance on natural hazards, nuclear waste,
and critical structures such as nuclear power plants and dams. Leahy retired
this year after 33 years of government service in various technical and
managerial positions.
Former SSA member Stanley Flatté, a professor emeritus of
physics at University of California, Santa Cruz, died 4 November 2007 after a
long illness. He was 66 years old. His professional contributions covered many
areas of physics, including ocean acoustics, atmospheric optics, and the
scattering of seismic waves in the deep earth.
SSA member Pembroke Hart died 10 February 2008 following a short
