William (Bill) Ellsworth is the new SSA president. He let go of his
elected seat on the SSA Board of Directors after a term and one-half to take
on the organization's top leadership role.
Ellsworth is a senior research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey
in Menlo Park.
During his 35-year career with the USGS, he has conducted research on
fundamental problems in seismicity, seismotectonics, probabilistic earthquake
forecasting, earthquake source processes and earth structure, while providing
leadership and direction in areas of critical importance to the USGS
Earthquake and Volcano Hazards Programs. Some of his recent interests include
the first scientific drill hole into a major fault zone near Parkfield,
California, in 2005; study of the near-field motions during the 2002 Denali
fault (Alaska) earthquake; ultra-high-resolution studies of seismic processes
using the double-difference method; and development of a widely adopted
physically based model for earthquake recurrence.
While on the SSA board of directors, Ellsworth represented the Society on
the organizing committee of the 100th Anniversary Earthquake Conference, which
commemorated the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the founding of SSA. He has
been a strong advocate of promoting scientific applications to educating the
public about earthquakes.
He succeeds Michael Fehler, who served as SSA president from 2005 to 2007.
Fehler also is an editor emeritus of the Bulletin of the Seismological
Society of America. Until recently, he was division leader of the Earth
and Environmental Sciences Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Later
this year, Fehler will . . . [Full Text of this Article]
